Fannie Elliott Lester, age 90, of Commonwealth Senior Living at Stratford House in Danville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 13, 2017 at Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center after a brief illness.
She was born on March 11, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late William F. Elliott and the late Florence Satterfield Elliott. She was married to the late Rawley James Lester.
She graduated from Spring Garden High School in 1944. Before marriage she worked at Leggetts in Danville, as a hairdresser at the Masonic Temple in Danville, and at the Spring Garden Cannery. She had her early Christian training at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Keeling, where she became a member at age 10.
In 1948 she married Rawley James “RJ” Lester, who preceded her in death in 1994.
She became a member of Shockoe Baptist Church in 1948. She served as a trustee and as chairwoman for the stained-glass project at the church. She was a G.A. leader and camp sponsor, sang in the choir, and traveled with a gospel trio.
She was president of the Spring Garden Garden club, and the Spring Garden Homemakers Club, was the state historian of the Young Homemakers of Virginia, and served Pittsylvania County as a voter registrar in the Spring Garden district. She and RJ were named Outstanding Young Farmers in 1958.
She is survived by three daughters, Virginia Lester Goodson and her husband Jerry of Bristol, Nancy James Lester of Greensboro, NC, and Gail Lester Lockrow and her husband Dr. Ernest Lockrow of Kensington, MD; one grandson, Jack Andrew Goodson of Alexandria; three step-grandchildren, Amanda Lockrow of Los Angeles, CA, Shannon Seebeck and her husband Josh of Colorado Springs, CO, and Kim Tutor and her husband Dan of Islesboro, ME; and two step-great-grandchildren, Noah and Alex Seebeck.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William F. Elliott, Jr. and Frank Covington. Graveside services will be conducted at Highland Burial Park on Tuesday January 17, 2017 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home on Monday January 16, 2017 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Our mother was a beautiful soul who spent a lifetime serving her family, friends, and church with unconditional love. She was the most loving and giving person her family has ever known.
