Obituary for Nancy Giles Newby

CHATHAM,

Nancy Giles Newby, age 88, affectionately known by those who loved her as “Granny”, of 276 Samuel Harris Ln. Chatham, went to be with her savior on June 3, 2018 at her residence.

She was born on June 17, 1929, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late Robert Lee Giles and the late Lemma Hutcherson Giles. She was married to her loving husband of 52 years, the late Jesse B. Newby, Sr.

She was a member of Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church, where she faithfully attended and served until declining health prevented her from attending. In her later years she worked at Pat’s Place where she made many good friends and conversation behind the counter and over a “pan of dishwater.”

She was a wonderful wife and mother and lovingly gave of herself to family and friends, whether it was a smile and a hug, a listening ear, or one of her brown sugar pies. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by one son, Jesse B. Newby, Jr. of Chatham; two daughters, Carolyn (Carroll) Younger of Chatham and Doris Ann (Steve) Motley; six grandchildren, Brian Newby of San Diego, CA, Cindy (Robert) Mills of Callands, Teresa Newby of Bakersfield, CA, Melissa (David) Hubbard of Danville, Derek (Michelle) Motley of Glade Hill, and Dustin (Carly) Motley of Ringgold; a granddaughter in love, Jamie (David) Stowe of Chatham; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Giles and Thomas Giles; and three sisters, Doris Newby, Margaret Hardy, and Elizabeth Childress.

Funeral services will be conducted at Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church on Wednesday June 6, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr. Bruce Cole officiating.

Burial will follow at Hillcrest Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Samuel Harris Memorial Baptist Church on Tuesday June 5, 2018 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm and at other times will be at the residence, 276 Samuel Harris Ln. Chatham, VA.
