Obituary for William James Harris



CHATHAM,
William James Harris, age 99, of 801 Tightsqueeze Rd. Chatham, VA, entered into rest on January 16, 2019 at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on March 30, 1919, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Justice Harris and the late Hattie Easley Harris.
He was married to the late Mary Murphy Harris.
He was a lifelong member of Concord United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the board and on various committees through the years. He operated businesses in Chatham and sold Modern Woodmen Insurance. He loved his family and enjoyed gardening, coached little league baseball, played fast-pitch softball and loved quail and grouse hunting. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Henry) Shelhorse; a son, Kenneth Harris; two grandchildren, Stanley (Mia) Shelhorse and James (Erin) Shelhorse; four great-grandchildren, Abigail Shelhorse, Emma Shelhorse, Emily Shelhorse, Blake Shelhorse; and a brother, Emmett Harris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be conducted at Concord Methodist Church on Saturday January 19, 2019 at 11:00 am with Rev. Tobias Lutz and Rev. Chris Bennett officiating.
Burial will follow at Concord United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 801 Tightsqueeze Rd. Chatham, VA.
