Obituary for Elisabeth Bradner "Bettye" Crocker

Elisabeth “Bettye” Bradner Crocker, age 86, of Hardy, entered into rest on August 26, 2019 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born on November 17, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, the daughter of the late David Daniel Bradner and the late Onie Saunders Bradner.

She was married to the late Leonard P. Crocker.

She was a graduate of Chatham High School and attended Virginia Intermont College for a year, then worked for a number of years before receiving her BS from Averett University in 1975. She received a master’s degree in social work in 1979 from VCU. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She served as past president of the Virginia chapter of National Association of Social Workers. She had a long career in Social Services and retired from Portsmouth Naval Hospital in August 2001 as a Neonatal Social Worker. Earlier in life, she worked for the Star-Tribune and wrote a regular column called Whistlin’ Dixie in the Journal Messenger in northern Virginia. Known for writing letters to family members to keep in touch, she continued to write and most recently published a story in the SML Anthology of Lake Writers. She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbye Yeatts of Huddleston and Pattye Compton (Lewis) of Gretna; a brother, Robert Bradner of Toledo, OH; a sister, Nancy Love of Charlottesville; Five Grandchildren, Ally Yeatts, Lenny Keesee, Asheley Keesee, Chris Compton, and Nina Compton; Two Great-Grandchildren Layla Keesee, Luke Keesee; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Keesee (Phillip).

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Leonard P. Crocker, III and a daughter, Elisabeth C. Osbourne.

Funeral services will be conducted at Scott Funeral Home on Thursday August 29, 2019 at 11:00 am.

Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at Scott Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 207 Gretna, VA 24557.
