Obituary for Joyce W. Anderson

On March 11, 2018 surrounded by her family, Joyce W. Anderson drew her last breath and departed this earthly existence following an extended illness. Joyce is survived by her daughter Deborah Anderson of Roanoke, Virginia, a son and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Beth Anderson of Roanoke, Virginia, grandchildren, Ben and Jane Anderson of Greenville South Carolina, Jordan and Katie Anderson of Boston, Massachusetts, William and MaryFran Anderson of Greenville South Carolina, great grandchildren Jack, Charlotte and Lyla Anderson all of Greenville, South Carolina, numerous cousins and loyal and dedicated friends, Curtis Barley, Bogey Adkins and Jessie Felix.
Joyce graduated from Spring Garden High School in 1951. After a few years of classes at the predecessor to Danville Community College, Joyce married Verne, and they began their life together of almost 64 years on the Anderson family farm on Bearskin Creek in the Climax community, where they raised their family. Joyce began her working career at Dry Fork Milling Company and later moved to the Bank of Chatham where she remained through numerous bank mergers eventually retiring in 1995 from Bank of America after a 29 year career in banking. Joyce was a dedicated and active member of Greenpond Baptist Church where for many years she sang and lead the choir, taught a sunday school class, assisted with preparing the bulletin, and served as a Diaconess. She was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pittsylvania County Farm Bureau Federation.
However, her greatest joy was being a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Although small of stature, she possessed great strength of spirit, kindness and generosity. She loved preparing meals for her family, especially around the holidays, her chocolate pies, macaroni and cheese and homemade biscuits were legendary. Her departure from us, while leaving a void in the lives of many which will never be filled, has provided a final healing from her many years of suffering. She is finally at peace.
A memorial service will be held at Greenpond Baptist Church on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 11:00 AM Reverend Steve Carlton officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 15, 2018 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Scott Funeral Home Chatham, Virginia. The family requests donations in lieu of flowers to Greenpond Baptist Church or Chatham Rescue Squad. The family asks for no visits or deliveries to the family home.
