Obituary for Donald Gourlay Hogg

Donald G. Hogg, 72, born on 09/03/1946 in Drumheller, Alberta Canada to the late Dorothy Dumont (Hogg) Roop and Dr. Robert Ritchie Hogg, died June 21, 2019 in UVA Medical Center, Charlottesville, VA after a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna Watson Hogg of Penhook, VA, three children Donald Ritchie Hogg of Amherst, Jennifer Hogg Querry of Madison Heights and Julie Wray Hogg Holley of Goode, VA, four grandchildren, Austin Michael Querry, Jordan Lee Querry, Tyler Wray Holley and Owen Clayton Holley. He is also survived by a beloved son-in-law, Donnie Carroll Holley, also of Goode, VA as well as his 5 siblings, Robert Hogg (Frances), Caryl Yeatts (Coleman), Ralph Hogg (Cheryl), David Hogg, Maggie Gardiner (Tony), all of the Chatham-Danville area.
Don was a partner in a Martinsville accounting firm, Sells, Hogg & Associates. He was a wonderful son, brother, brother-in-law, husband, Dad, Papa, uncle and great uncle, coach, referee and a mentor to many. He was loved by his clients, coworkers, referee buddies, friends and family. He was generous to a fault, loving, kind, sweet, and tender, a confidant and peacemaker. Everything he did he gave “his all”. He saw the “good” qualities of everyone in his life and was an exceptional motivator to many young people over the years.
Don served as Commissioner of the Dan-Mar (Danville-Martinsville) Virginia High School League Referee Association for 22 years and had more than for 39 years of experience in sports refereeing. Before that, he coached Martinsville City Recreation basketball and baseball for many years, AAU basketball and was assistant JV basketball coach for a local Charter School, Carlisle.
Along with his wife, Donna, Don was instrumental in getting the Workers’ Compensation law “City of Danville School Board vs Bonnie Lee Watson” passed into state law in February, 2002.
He also served as Treasurer of Cottage Edge Community in which he lived for 15 years.
The Service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Church St. Martinsville, VA., Saturday, July 13th at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the local S.P.C.A. of Martinsville-Henry County or The American Diabetes Association.
